I qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist in 1984, and up until 2008, worked for the Health Service as a Principal Speech and Language Therapist. I now work as a freelance tutor teaching Makaton, the internationally recognised communication programme using signs, symbols and speech, and am able to provide training to establishments and groups all over Hampshire and along the South Coast.

About Makaton

Used extensively in early years and education settings, Makaton has been proven to support and encourage communication skills in children with additional needs with the use of signs, symbols and speech. Makaton can only be delivered by licensed tutors who have been trained by the Makaton Charity and attend regular tutor refresher days.

Learning Makaton

As an experienced practitioner, I am able to offer a wide range of Makaton Workshops designed to meet your individual needs.

Workshop formats vary from 2 hour taster sessions to full two day courses. All workshops are practically based and can be delivered as flexible modules, including in the evenings and at weekends. Courses can be tailored to meet needs of specific settings or groups of families.

Makaton Signing for Babies

Recent research from Canada and the USA found that babies who use gestures early learn to speak more readily than babies who do not. Reported benefits also include improved attention and social skills.

Baby signing sessions are designed to help families, carers and staff to use gestures with babies and young children through songs and play activities. The best stage for a baby to attend sessions with his or her parents is from about 6 months old, but older toddlers also enjoy the sessions. You will learn approximately 100 signs in a setting aimed at providing fun for the both of you!
